library thig #23

It has been quite a journey. My favorite discoveries were photostory and blogger. This program has defenitely made me acquire more knowledge and helped me apply it to my career. I did not expect to do so much researching of Web 2.0 tools and this is only a part of it. It is amazing that there is still so much more! I think the format was wonderful, I would not change it. The program has been very helpful so I would defenitely participate in another one. I am thrilled to have played with Library 2 Play!

library thing # 22

Ning for Teachers is a great tool for collaborating with other teachers. You can find lesson plans, blogs, and even a message board. It even features fashion tips for teachers on a budget!

library thing # 21

Photostory is great for students wanting to share photos/stories of a particular subject. Photostory is a great way for librarians to preview a book with teachers. The one I did is for
upcoming Earth Day.

YouTube and TeacherTube are valuable resources for the librarian or classroom teacher to use in
their lessons. We are starting a unit on chicks this week for 1st graders. We have an incubator with eggs. What if the chicks hatch on the weekend? I will show them this video of chicks hatching in case they miss it.

It is amazing of the countless web 2.0 tools available in the internet. Before this class, I had no idea there were so many information tools! I really like Google Docs because I'm able to do documents at home and be able to access them at school from any computer. LibraryThing is a very useful tool for the library because it gives you information about books you may want to purchase for the library, such as reviews and recommendations.

An advantage of having free online tools is for example, having a computer that does not come with Microsoft Office. Open Office is highly rated because of the functionality of the data that it provides, it also has extensions such as, dictionaries, most popular, and recent searches. It was interesting to see that Open Office welcomes contributors or monetary donation for more development. One disadvantage in my mind would be the lack of privacy. Even though the only way to access is by logging in, I would still rely on Microsoft Office because it is private and offers backup for your files and it also includes a firewall for blockage. It is basically the one that we all use. A disadvantage of Microsoft Office is the cost.

Rollyo really saves time in your searches. I did a couple of searches for Earth Day. I feel much more comfortable when a student has access to immediate results without having to wonder around hundreds of other unreliable websites. It definitely downsizes your searches with your favorite picks.

Wikis are fun because everyone is always collaborating. It is a very useful tool to use in the classroom and in the library. One way I would use wikis would be for book reviews. As a librarian, I would promote a certain book that teachers might like and have them comment using Wiki. Book Lovers Wiki offers reviews of different genres that would be helpful for selecting.

library 2 play #15

Libraries lack resources and have inadequate staff according to Away from Icebergs. Yes, we do have inadequate staff, and this I found in my "standards project" for my information literacy class. As for lacking resources, I believe that libraries do offer many resources but sometimes they are not being used to the fullest extent. Into a new world of librarianship basically states the ways the librarian will sell to patrons. Technology is there but what kind of marketing will the librarian do to welcome patrons? The librarian is ultimately trendsetter in using web 2.0 tools.

Technorati is a very helpful tool for the librarian/teacher. Lesson plans can be shared by just clicking a keyword. Tagging from de.licio.us has made my life easier. Tagging tools make searches very specific and are easier to search and limits your research of going through material that could be a waste of time.

delicious is a wonderful tool to use for bookmarking. I did not know that you could social network bookmarks. Now I can browse my bookmarks through any computer. For example, I bookmarked several URL's that are useful information for our final presentation in this class. My group can actually join and view them. Librarians and classroom teachers can bookmark topics of curriculum and can have them organized so it won't be overwhelming.

One point that was very important to me was the importance ways to comment in a blog discussed in How to Comment Like a King (or Queen!). The other point that was discussed in commenting using an alias vs. your real name is important because as for me, I do not feel comfortable using my name. So I have been using alias "eveblogger" for sign in to different sites.
One of the blogs I found that could be helpful for our final presentation was library collaboration. I also found A Library By Any Other Name to use for collaboration. VWB's picture popped out in this blog.

library 2 play #11

Library Thing is a helpful way to keep books organized. I would use LibraryThing in the library to review different genres including new books. The neat thing is that you can join certain groups that share the same opinions. It is simple to join. The group tag that I reviewed was genres. This group would be useful to the library because you can find information you want to know about a book including how many members it has.

I really liked Comic Strip Generator. I would use comic strip for notes to staff. It is a fun way of communicating. Also, we use Wordle in our classroom. We have it in the computer center and students add their weekly spelling words. It is a fun way to review them.

This image was created by Comic Strip Generator.

The search tool that was easiest for me was Blogline's Search tool. The one that was confusing was Google Blog Search because when I typed "Library2Play", it gave me blogs that were not even pertaining to education. The useful feed that I found was communicating effectively with co-workers. This blog has useful information on collaboration.

Library 2 play #8 - revised with hot link

I like the RSS and readers because you have easy access to more up-to-date information. One of the ways I will use this technology is for "united streaming." Discovery Education usually updates their newest information but I never know when they do it. Libraries/teachers/administrators can use readers for easy access to blogs within the school/district.

Library 2 play #7

I set up a "google alert" for vacation deals. This is such a useful tool to use for any inquiry you wish to know about. I would use "google alert" in the library for the latest book publishings.
I also set up a "google calendar." It is so easy to use. I posted all my information for the week. I can just print it out to have it in close view in my classroom. You can add friend's calendars by adding their e-mail for sharing. Teachers can post assignments on these calendars so students can view them.

Library 2 play #6

I would use Flickr mashups for a kindergarten library lesson such as, the traveling of "Flat Stanley." I would be able to use many photos from Flickr and be able to paste them on a U.S. map from google. Also, I would use mashups for a Social Studies lesson in Texas. I would be able to use photos of resources found in Texas and paste them on a Texas map.

I love this picture. Our science objective for this month is plants and what better way than to show this vivid picture. Thanks again VWB!

Library 2 play #4

Wow, it took me 2 hours to get my avatar into my blog!!

Library 2 play #3

Revised:
My strongest habit would be "beginning with the end in mind." I usually foresee what I need to achieve a certain goal.
My weakest habit would be "viewing problems as challenges." I go through stress when I come across a problem and I need to remind my self that it is indeed a "challenge" for life-long learning.
